The Journey to Freedom Park

The Freedom Park Renaming Initiative

In 2023, Friends of Freedom Park led a community-driven campaign to officially rename Broderick Park to Freedom Park — a meaningful step toward honoring history, reclaiming space, and uplifting the voices of those who have long called this neighborhood home.

The renaming initiative was rooted in collective action, reflection, and dialogue. Community members, local leaders, organizers, and supporters came together to advocate for a name that better reflects the park’s legacy as a site connected to freedom, resilience, and the Underground Railroad. Through outreach, petitions, meetings, and public engagement, residents made clear their desire for a name that acknowledges both the past and the future.

Renaming the park was more than a symbolic change — it was an act of healing, recognition, and empowerment. Freedom Park now stands as a space that honors ancestors, celebrates community strength, and welcomes future generations to gather, reflect, and thrive.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who participated, spoke up, volunteered, and supported this effort. The success of the name change reflects what’s possible when community leads.
